Calico Jack – The Project

Building a Ship :

Made of iron wood and teak, Calico Jack will combine ancient traditions and modern developments to provide a beautiful sailing vessel.

The Konjo shipwrights of Sulawesi employ their ancestral skills and techniques to build the wooden super structure of the boat on the beach of Tana Beru. (Sulawesi ship building)

Calico Jack will be fitted in Bali with the latest green technology devices to meet our needs in energy on board. We aspire to make the most of the power provided by the natural world. (Eco policy)

We will employ the local talents and the traditional arts and crafts to create the interior design of the ship. Woodcarvers and artists will be involved in applying the final touches of Calico Jack.

Documenting the process :

From the laying of the keel to the hosting of the sails…

  •  The filming of a factual 2-part documentary (2 x 52 min) of the complete building process with a view for broadcast on worldwide networks. (The Documentary)
  • The production of a day-to-day chronicle on this website providing regular updates of blogs and photos throughout the development of the project.

Living the Adventure :

Cruising the world and sharing the excitement.

  • Sailing, Diving and Exploring on a “green” custom-crafted ship and travel with regard to our environment. (Design)
  • Offering our guests to learn sailing and diving and gather creativity to make the most of the sea gypsies adventures.  (On board.)

The construction of the ship started in August 2011 in Tanah Beru.. Calico Jack will be ready to be launched in August 2012. We will then take the second step and sail to Bali to work on the fitting out while starting the shooting of the 2nd part of the documentary. Calico Jack will be plying the seas of South East Asia in 2013 and we hope to explore other parts of the world in the future.
